Plans for a new 420-place primary school in Tameside have been given the go-ahead.
Tameside councillors approved plans to build the Inspire Academy at Mossley Road, Ashton. It will also provide 26 full time nursery places, another 420-place primary school on a plot of land in Hattersley, will be called the Discovery Academy.
He said: “These are the first brand new schools we have had in Tameside in recent years – as opposed to knocking down and re-building an existing schools. They will provide more than 800 places and also 52 nursery places with the schools, so we welcome them.”
The current demand for school places is due to an increase in the birth rate across the borough since 2006 and more families moving to the area due to new housing developments.£8m in government funding will help pay for both new school developments – on the proviso that they are both sponsored academies.
Both will be sponsored and run by the Carillion Academies Trust. Though answerable to the trust and the government, the academies will be out of local authority control, the school will open in September 2015. Building work on the Discovery Primary Academy off Porlock Avenue, Hattersley was given the go ahead last month.
