A library bought by residents when it was axed in council cuts is set to re-open in time for the school summer holidays.

Families in Denton, Tameside, clubbed together to raise enough to buy Dane Bank Library after it was closed down last October.

The council gifted the group of residents all the books and computers inside – and it will now re-open during the school summer holidays.

Children in the area will be able to use the library to take part in the region-wide Summer Reading Challenge.

An open weekend will also take place for people to see inside the library and find out how it will now be run. It is set to re-open permanently later this year.

One of five Tameside libraries closed under council cuts, Denton West End Community Library was taken over by 11 trustees and a wider group of volunteers.

The group raised £30,000 and took out a ‘six figure’ loan to buy the building on Windsor Road, but declined to say the exact amount.

It is being funded through a ‘Friends’ scheme and donations through standing order with rooms rented out for community groups and businesses.

Local contractors have also volunteered by carrying out maintenance and electrical work for free.

Anne Thomas, chair of the library trustees, said: “We were determined that this library would remain open and it is to the great credit of the local community that we have been able to achieve our goal.

“We have plans to expand the use of the premises to include summer reading programmes and activities for kids, playgroups, book clubs and other community activities, to really make the library a focal point for everyone in the area.

“We really want to see people of all ages here, because the message is very clear – if you don’t want to lose it, use it.”

The library open day takes place on Saturday, from 10am - 1pm and Sunday 14 from 1-4pm.
