Tameside Council is hoping to become the first council in the country to charge venues to stay open after midnight.
The charges would be related to the rateable value of the property and would also include supermarkets.
A three month consultation is taking place to consider the proposal. All the money would be spent Tameside, it would pay for taxi marshalls, street pastors, initiatives to tackle alcohol related crimes and extra policing.
Head of Tameside Police Chief Superintendant,Nick Appleby, backed the councils scheme. He said "there is a recognised problem over Tameside's night time economyand this consultation is a great opportunity to hear what the public would consiider to be effective in ensuring a safe night out whilst maintaining a vibrant night life in the area".
