The author and Hyde historian Valerie Bowker will be signing copies of her new book “Events in the Life of William Calland, a Gunner in Wellington’s Army” at Tameside Local Studies and Archives Centre, Cotton Street, Ashton, on Wednesday, November 25 (11am to 2pm).
Valerie's interest in the soldier was sparked in 2012 when an archaeological dig took place at Newton Hall, Hyde, organised by the Local History Forum with a Heritage Lottery grant.

One of the many workshops linked to the project looked at local historical maps and the changing population. Val noticed in the census reports that William Calland born in 1795, was listed as a Chelsea Pensioner and she decided to do some research.

The book, which costs £4, is not a biography but more of an account of events that shaped his life and those of his company.
