Tameside Firefighters rescue dog from canal

Tameside Firefighters rescued an adorable dog from a canal after it found himself stuck inside a tyre in the water.
Scruffy the terrier had a lucky escape after falling in a canal off Portland Street in Ashton-under-Lyne on Thursday at around noon.
Ashton’s White Watch crew donned life jackets and used a ladder to get to Scruffy and carry him to safety. He was given some water and wrapped up warm in a blanket before being whisked away in the back of a fire engine.
Scruffy was then handed over to the RSPCA while his owners are traced. Thedog is said to be in good spirits.
Watch Manager Trevor Smallwood said: “We were called to the incident by the police and when we got there we found a little dog stuck inside a tyre that was partially submerged in the water.
“We used a ladder to climb over a locked gate and wall to get to the dog then we scooped him up, gave him some fresh water, wrapped him in a blanket and put him on the back of the fire engine.
“He was shivering and we think he was in shock, but he seemed okay after some TLC.”
