Ashton Businessman Don Allen, 73,spent 18 years making a model locomotive for his grandson.
The 1960`s American engine took 8,500 hours to build.Don became interested in building it after
reading about the 1969 Locomotive Centennial built by Union Pacific to celebrate the 100th anniversary
of the Transcontinental Railroad across America.
Don had to create his own plans prior to building it as there were no draughtsmans plans of the engine.
Jack,Dons grandson, now 18 and about to start Manchester University, thinks its marvellous and well worth the wait.
The Locomotive which weighs more than 500 Kilos and is powered by 16 electric motors is now fully operational.
