The first trams will soon arrive at Ashton-under-Lyne testing out the Metrolink extension to the town.

The line to the heart of Tameside is almost complete and drivers are expected to start overnight runs in the next few weeks.

Bosses expect to open the extension on time as planned this winter.

Peter Cushing, Transport for Greater Manchester’s Metrolink director, said: “We’ve made excellent progress with the new Metrolink extension to Ashton and are well on track for opening the new line this winter, as planned.”

Metrolink is undergoing a £1.4bn expansion, with new lines also opening to Wythenshawe and Manchester airport, and through Oldham and Rochdale town centres.

There are also plans to create a new line through the city centre.

News that work is going well on the 2.1 mile extension to Ashton-under-Lyne comes less than two months after the latest line in the expansion project opened to East Didsbury.

The East Manchester Line to Droylsden, which opened in February, will have four new stops at Audenshaw, Ashton Moss, Ashton West and Ashton-under-Lyne.
