Tameside Countryside Services are organising a series of Conservation Days where members of the public can volunteer to help in various conservation projects in Tameside. These are being promoted on the BBC's main website and also on the BBC programme Countryfile's website. No experience is required just a willingness to learn new skills, strong footwear and waterproof clothes.
On Saturday 30th November at Haughton Green the conservation activities include hedgelaying,to encourage hedges to put on new growth to improve the overall structure and strength and to give greater weather protection to wildlife. On the 3rd of December,again at Haughton Green, activities involve, Coppicing : cutting back trees and shrubs to provide a varied structure and light levels which will provide a better habitat for wildlife.
Thursday 12th December see the conservation project move to Knott Mill and involves woodland thinning : restructuring the woodlands and promoting native species by removing the non-native species and weeds.
Finally, on Sunday 15th of December volunteers are invited to take part in a mistletoe meander finding out about the plants used at christmas
