Ex Manchester United, Oldham Athletic and Republic of Ireland legend Denis Irwin recently surprised students at Astley Sports College in Dukinfield by getting involved in some games with year seven and eight pupils.
Denis also gave some of the pupils a special shooting lesson with an exhibition of shots from his famous right foot, the 49-year-old former full-back then conducted a question and answer session.
The visit also sought to highlight the appearance of Denis in a legends’ match at Old Trafford in June against Bayern Munich legends XI where money raised from the game will go to the Manchester United Foundation charity. Alongside Denis the likes of Edwin van der Sar, Phil Neville, Jaap Stam, Andrew Cole, Dwight Yorke and Paul Scholes will also be in action.
Denis thoroughly enjoyed the day and said that It was great to put a smile on kids’ faces and teach them the importance of health, wellbeing, and the power of football.
Manchester United Foundation coach Rob Curran, who is based full time at the college, said that it was greatTo get advice from an ex-professional who has played at the top of his game is always going to be of benefit to the pupils.
