A NEW strategy lays out a clear vision for how Tameside will grow its economy in an inclusive way that benefits all its residents.
Tameside Council has launched the Inclusive Growth Strategy for 2021-26 after working in close consultation with residents and partner organisations.
It lays out 13 key aims for how growth is delivered, which will ensure that Tameside can build back better from Covid-19, recovering in a way that brings a fairer economy for all. This includes inclusive employment and training opportunities for those most impacted by Covid-19.
And it details the borough's existing strengths and how these can be built on, allowing Tameside to take advantage of the opportunities offered by its location and historic specialisms to improve the lives of residents, help grow local businesses and address economic challenges.
The ambitious plan will now become the guiding document for how the Council will approach making the borough's economy broader, stronger and more inclusive.
One of several key projects earmarked for investment is the St Petersfield area of Ashton – Tameside's primary quality office development with capacity for 30,000sqms of new floorspace and home to health, legal and digital and tech businesses. It includes the transformation of the historic Ashton Old Baths into a pioneering digital hub, which will be fully completed in April when work finishes on the data centre extension to accommodate an additional 73 new jobs in the media, digital and creative sectors.
Ashton Moss, a 58 hectare site with capacity for 160,000sqms of high quality employment facilities and a scale and location ideal for an Advanced Manufacturing hub, will also be developed as part of the plans.
A large scale housing and employment development is also proposed at Godley Green Garden Village and the highly successful regeneration project in Hattersley is continuing with the delivery of 270 new homes, a ticket office refurbishment and extension at Hattersley Station, gateway improvements and community engagement projects.
Cllr Oliver Ryan, Executive member for Growth and Finance, said: "Tameside has a rich history of social and economic leadership and industrial innovation. This strategy will focus on ensuring that the quality of life, health and happiness of our people is improved by good employment, with greater security and better pay. It will benefit our businesses by improving productivity and will provide for proactive public service reform in a thriving, varied, inclusive economy.
"We are continuing to build a successful, clean, modern, digitally enhanced economy that makes for both better businesses and better lives. Our actions will create opportunity for new businesses, new and better ways of doing business and for new jobs.
"The Inclusive Growth Strategy will guide us as we deliver the next phase of our success; developing key employment sites such as St Petersfield and Ashton Moss, improving our digital and transport infrastructure to drive our recovery, updating and expanding our housing offer across the borough, revitalising and diversifying our town centres, and delivering skills and employment programmes to bring long term benefit to all our residents and businesses."
Progress is already being made with the Council's Strategic Asset Management Plan ensuring that all of its buildings and assets contribute to the prosperity of the borough, with ongoing projects focusing on turning our town centres into economic growth engines and vibrant community hubs.
