Tameside’s spectacular lantern parade will be the first of many exciting events in the borough during the countdown to Christmas.

The 2016 parade – to be held on Saturday 12 November in Ashton town centre -  is expected to be bigger and better than ever, bringing together all communities to showcase how “We Shine Bright Together’.

There will also be community led Christmas lights switch on events and celebrations in all the borough’s towns.

Families, individuals and groups from across Tameside have been taking part in free lantern making workshops in preparation for the parade. Further workshops, all free, will be held as follows:

Saturday 29 Oct 10.00am-3.30pm The Grafton Centre, Hyde
Sunday 30 Oct 10.00am-3.30pm Portland Basin, Ashton

The parade will start at 6pm on Katherine St, Ashton, and will take a 45-minute route through the town centre and Stamford Street – an ideal spot to watch it go by. The event will conclude at the Old Cross St Carpark with a fantastic, community led Christmas lights switch on, music and pyrotechnic finale.

Tameside Council Executive Member Cllr Ged Cooney, responsible for culture, said: “Christmas promises to be a really special community celebration in Tameside this year. Hundreds of people from across the borough have already got involved in the lantern parade and I hope many more will come along on the night to watch the fantastic procession and enjoy the finale in Old Cross Street Car Park.

“The communities in all our towns have also come together to plan some great Christmas lights switch on and celebration events with activities and entertainment for all the family. Do get involved, support your local towns and businesses and share in the festivities.”
