Big finish for Christmas market

A BIG wheel and real reindeer will be in town for the final weekend of celebrations for Tameside Christmas Market from 16 to 18 December.
The event, in Market Street, Ashton, has been a great success with excellent feedback from both shoppers and traders – who reported making back their rent within just a few hours of opening on 2 December.
Visitors have enjoyed free fairgrounds over the three weekends of the Christmas market as well as walkabout characters, entertainment and over 20 speciality stalls selling gifts, crafts, food and festive drinks from local traders.
Santa’s Grotto has been another highlight - with all proceeds going to the Mayor’s Charity supporting a number of local good causes.
The fun’s not over yet with more free rides, stalls and entertainment to enjoy this weekend. The real reindeer will be on site from 11am to 3pm on both Saturday and Sunday and free donkey rides from 11am on Sunday.
There will also be performances from brass bands and local dance schools and singers.
Tameside Council Executive Deputy Leader Cllr John Tayor, who is responsible for markets, said: “Thanks to everyone who has already joined us at the Christmas market and supported local traders – whether you have or haven’t visited yet there’s still time to come along and enjoy the final weekend of festivities.
"This year we have gone for a really traditional, family feel with lots of free fun as well as festive shopping – there’s something for everyone and it’s a great opportunity to enjoy the lovely atmosphere of a Christmas market without facing huge costs or even bigger crowds.
“The event complements the many vibrant shops and market stalls already on offer, helping to promote Tameside, support traders and boost business.”
Tameside Council has worked with town teams and community partner to support Christmas celebrations and activities across the borough – for further details see the Christmas What’s On in Tameside 2016 guide at
