Green Machines are on the Scene

IT'S green for go when it comes to keeping Tameside's grass in good shape. Cutting-edge battery-powered equipment is not only cheaper than its petrol-driven equivalent, it's quieter, safer and cleaner too.

Previously unable to provide the running times professionals need, battery technology has reached a new level of performance and dependability.

With improved capacity and much-shortened charge times, and the option of having several batteries, it now offers a reliable power source that is ideal for grounds maintenance teams as they take on their many tasks such as mowing grass, maintaining shrubs and looking after bowling greens and hedgerows.

The benefits, which are huge, include less vibration, cost-savings, less noise and no fumes or pollution. Battery-powered machinery causes much less disturbance to surrounding areas and is safe to operate and easier to store.

Extensive use of handheld power tools can lead to Hand-Arm-Vibration syndrome (Vibration White Finger) which causes disabling disorders of the nerves and joints as well as extreme pain in cold conditions. With battery-powered machinery the chances of contracting this condition are eliminated.

Once the initial investment has been made, the running and maintenance costs are incredibly low. There is no need for regular servicing such as changing filters, oil or spark plugs, and no need to buy fuel.

The absence of petrol also means no smells. This not only makes the machinery ideal for areas such as cemeteries and parks, where it can be used without disturbing the public, the lack of heavy fumes reduces levels of work-related stress among operators.

Cllr Allison Gwynne, Tameside Council's executive member for neighbourhood services, said: "In an age where we're always looking for the greener way to manage our services, battery-powered equipment is clearly the way forward. Not only does it produce zero emissions and environmental damage, it now provides petrol-matching power.

"When we invest in equipment these days we have to factor in matters such as health and safety and carbon reduction. That's why batteries are becoming the power source of choice."
